Compound of (ka, distal pronoun: "that one yonder", far from both speaker and listener) +‎ (na, old genitive / possessive marker) +‎ (ta, ancient morpheme indicating direction).[1][2] Compare the formation of 日向 (hinata, sunshine, a sunny place, literally sun's direction, sun-facing), using the same genitive na and direction-marking ta.

First attested in 883.[1]
