Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *qoː) and ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : phonetic 區 (OC *qoː, *kʰo, “vessel”) + semantic 瓦 (“pottery”).
Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ʔəw-ŋ (“pot; vat; jar”) (reconstructed provisionally). Related to 碗 (OC *qoːnʔ, “bowl”) and possibly 甕 (OC *qoːŋs, “urn”). Compare Burmese အိုး (ui:, “pot”) (Schuessler, 2007).
