Etymology
[edit]Appears to be a Meiji period repurposing or borrowing, probably based on written Chinese 設備 / 设备 (shèbèi, “equipment; to make preparations and arrangements”) and Old Japanese 設け備ふ (makesonapu), modernized classical Japanese 設け備う (makesonau, “to arrange in preparation”).
First attested in a pocket English–Japanese dictionary from 1862, provided as the gloss for the verb season,[1] presumably from the sense of "to make something ready".
