From Proto-Southwestern Tai *raːᴬ² (we two (inclusive)). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩁᩣ, Khün ᩁᩣ, Lao ຮາ (), ᦣᦱ (haa), Shan ႁႃး (háa), Tai Nüa ᥞᥣᥰ (häa), Ahom 𑜍𑜠 (ra), Zuojiang Zhuang raz.
