From Old Japanese. Compound of 目 (ma, “eye”, ancient combining form of modern 目 (me)) + 門 (to, “gate, opening”), in reference to an opening for looking through.[1][2][3]
Alternatively, may be a compound of 間 (ma, “gap”) + 門 (to, “gate, opening”).[1][3][4]
First cited in some references to a text from 794,[5] and also found in the Man'yōshū of 759.[6]
The Microsoft Windows sense is a calque of English Windows.
