Usage notes

The contraction I'm is not used when the word am would fall at the end of a clause. For example, in response to the question "Are you okay?", the reply "Yes, I'm okay" is widely used, while "Yes, I'm" (as a complete sentence) or even "Yes, I'm, but..." are never used, and would always be said as "Yes, I am" or "Yes, I am, but..." respectively.
