From Proto-Turkic *tēl (“wire, string; thong; strand”)[1]. Cognate with Karakhanid تِلیٖ (tili, “thong”), Crimean Tatar and Turkish tel, Turkmen til, Kumyk and Nogai тел (tel), Chuvash тал (tal, “bundle”). Alternatively, related to Armenian թել (tʻel, “thread”)[2][3], either as a direct borrowing or originating from the same Iranian source.
