Historical forms of the character

References:

Mostly from Richard Sears' Chinese Etymology site (authorisation),
which in turn draws data from various collections of ancient forms of Chinese characters, including:

  • Shuowen Jiezi (small seal),
  • Jinwen Bian (bronze inscriptions),
  • Liushutong (Liushutong characters) and
  • Yinxu Jiaguwen Bian (oracle bone script).

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *l̥ʰjalʔ): semantic (person) + phonetic (OC *ʔl'aːl).

Etymology 1[edit]

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g(r/l)aːj (scatter, sow, dispersedly widely; wide; star) (STEDT, Schuessler, 2007).

  • Insides Chinese, cognate with (OC *ʔl'aːlʔ), (OC *lal), (OC *reːls, *rel, *rels) (STEDT);
  • Outsides Chinese, cognate with Burmese ကျယ် (kyai, wide), Mizo tai (scatter, disperse), Northern Qiang [script needed] (ʁdʐə, star) (Mawo), Southern Qiang [Term?] (χdʐe³³pe⁵⁵, star) (Taoping), etc. (ibid.).
