LATIN LETTER PHARYNGEAL VOICED FRICATIVE
ʔ
[U+0294]
IPA Extensions ʖ
[U+0296]

Translingual

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From ⟨ʿ⟩, which is used in scientific transliteration of Semitic languages, itself based on the Greek spiritus asper. The IPA form may also have been influenced by Arabic ع.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA (fricative):(file)
  • IPA (approximant):(file)

Symbol

[edit]

ʕ

  1. (IPA) a voiced pharyngeal fricative or approximant.
  2. (superscript ˤ) pharyngealization (primarily). See details at ˤ.

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The consonant transcribed ʕ in Arabic and some other Afro-Asiatic languages is usually a pharyngeal approximant (see second audio above). It may also be a pharyngealized glottal stop [ʔˤ]. True fricative realization is rare.
