Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *ŋaːls) : semantic 食 + phonetic 我 (OC *ŋaːlʔ).
Etymology
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mwat ~ *ŋ(w)at (“hungry; thirsty”). Cognate with Burmese မွတ် (mwat) and ငတ် (ngat).
