North Levantine Arabic
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From the ن that was part of already-pejorative terms like the below, which produced verbs meaning "to act like a..." that naturally ended in ن:
- كسلان (kaslān, kislān, “lazy”): تكسلن (tkaslan)
- شيطان (šayṭān, “Satan”): تشيطن (tšayṭan, “to act wicked, diabolical”)
- ملعون (malʕūn, “conniving, despicable”, literally “cursed”): تملعن (tmalʕan)
- بهسان (bahsān, bihsān, “layabout”): تبهسن (tbahsan)
- Possibly زعران (zuʕrān, “scoundrels”, plural of أزعر (ʔazʕar)): تزعرن (tzaʕran)
The ن that made it into verbs like these was then reanalyzed as a specifically verbal root extension and used productively on other triliteral roots.
Suffix
[edit]ـن • (n)
- Extension for triliteral roots that creates typically pejorative verbs and verbal nouns: فَعْلَن (faʕlan; CaCCan)
