Etymology[edit]

From Sanskrit मन्त्री (mantrī, adviser; counsellor; consultant; secretary, literally one with mantra; one reciting mantra; one versed in mantra); perhaps via Old Khmer mantrī (king's counsellor or minister). Cognate with Modern Khmer មន្ត្រី (mŭəntrəy). Compare Pali mantī.
