Etymology

From Proto-Tai *naːj A ("maternal grandmother"). The /n-/ -> /j-/ transformation is due to contamination by ย่า ("paternal grandmother"), which is semantically similar. Compare Indonesian nyai; Khmer យាយ (yiəy); Lao ຍາຍ (nyāi), ຍາຽ (nyāi); Shan ၼၢႆး (náai).
