Phono-semantic compound (形聲, OC *rul, *ruls): phonetic (OC *ruːl) + semantic (fine silk).

Etymology[edit]

“to bind; rope”
Related to (OC *roːl, *rul, “creeper; rambler”), (OC *rulʔ, “to wind; creeper”) (Wang, 1982).
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *rej ~ s-rwi(j)(obscure internal channel; cord; string; creeper; cane; rattan); cognate with Mizo hrui(creeper; cane; rope), Burmese ရိုး(rui:, kind of creeper; tree (in compounds)).
Proto-Tai *roːjᶜ(to string together) (whence Thai ร้อย(rɔ́ɔi)) may be a loan from Chinese (Manomaivibool, 1975).

Also see (OC *ruːls, *rolʔ, *rols).
