Verb
varen
Czech
Pronunciation
Noun
varen
Dutch
Etymology 1
From Middle Dutch vāren (“to go, travel”), from Old Dutch faran, from Proto-West Germanic *faran, from Proto-Germanic *faraną. The restriction to “travel by water” comes (expectably) from the western dialects; the more general sense survives in the east, but is no longer part of standard Dutch.
Pronunciation
Verb
varen
- to sail, to go by boat, to navigate
- to ascend or descend
- to fare
- (archaic or dialectal, eastern) to travel over land, to go by bike, car, train etc.
Inflection
According to the official "Groene Boekje" (the legal spelling standard for Dutch), the past tense for most senses is strong. Only the sense “to fare” has a weak past tense form.
(most senses): Strong conjugation.
