First attested in the Wamyō Ruijushō (938 CE).

Shift from Old Japanese 蓬蔂 (itibiko → ichibiko), attested earlier in the Nihon Shoki (720 CE) and the Shinsen Jikyō (c. 900 CE), itself a compound of (i-, prefix expressing sacredness) +‎ (chi, blood) +‎ (hiko, boy, prince). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
