Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *moɡs, *moːŋ) : semantic (rain) + phonetic (OC *moɡs).

Etymology 1

STEDT compares it to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *muːŋ ~ r/s-muːk (foggy; dark; sullen; menacing; thunder). Cognate with Tibetan རྨུ་བ (rmu ba, fog), Burmese မြူ (mru, minute particle; haze; fog).
