First attested in the Hunminjeong'eum haerye (訓民正音解例 / 훈민정음해례), 1446. as Middle Korean (pyēl), from Old Korean 星利 (*bjә-ri). [1] Compare dialectal forms 비얼 (bieol), (bael), 베리 (beri), (bil), etc.
