Pronunciation

Letter

Î (capital, lowercase î)

  1. The twelfth letter of the Romanian alphabet representing the phoneme /ɨ/. Preceded by I and followed by J.

Usage notes

Î is used at the beginnings and ends of words, while  (which has the same pronunciation) is used only within words. (As such, in its capital form, the letter  is only seen within words that are completely capitalized, e.g. ROMÂNIA). Î is still used when forming negative past participles and gerunds (e.g. neînțeles, not neânțeles, although the latter can be found in some sources)
