Etymology

Corrupted form of ๒ (sɔ̌ɔng, “two; twice”). Compare Khmer ៗ (ៗ); Lao ໆ; Northern Thai ᪧ.

Usage notes

• This marker is used to indicate that the word or phrase preceding it is repeated for the purpose of emphasis or any other purpose. Examples:

    Any person who brings into the kingdom anything which is a forged object under Section 240 or altered object under Section 241 shall be liable to the penalties set forth in such section.

• According to the style guide published by the Thai government, this marker is preceded by a space. A space is also set after the marker, except when the marker is followed by nothing else or by a full stop or some other marks. Examples:

• Repeated words or phrases in poetic works are spelt out, except when the use of this marker is specifically required by metrical rules. Examples:

• This marker is not used when the repeated words or phrases are of different parts of speech. Examples:

• This marker is not used when the repeated words or phrases belong to different sentences or clauses. Examples:
