Etymology
From Arabic سَمَاء ( samāʔ ) , from Proto-Semitic *šamāy- . Though Maltese has a general tendency to feminise words in -a , and though the Arabic etymon is much predominantly feminine to begin with, Maltese sema is a masculine. It is possible that this is due to interference by Sicilian celu .
