Glyph origin[edit]
Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *ɡrɯds, *kɯds, *krɯd) : phonetic 既 (OC *kɯds) + semantic 旦 (“sunrise”).
Etymology[edit]
Maybe exopassive of 及 (jí) (Baxter 1992, apud Schuessler 2007). Schuessler considers relation to 迄 (qì, “to reach to”) and 既 (jì, “already”) less likely as the Middle Chinese vowels do not agree.
