Glyph origin
[edit]Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *laŋʔ) : semantic 疒 (“illness”) + phonetic 養 (OC *laŋʔ, *laŋs).
Etymology
[edit]Probably from Proto-Sino-Tibetan, though the exact etymon is unclear. Compare Tibetan གཡའ (g.ya', “to itch”), Jingpho kaya (“to itch”), Burmese ယား (ya:, “to itch”), Japhug rɤʑa (“to itch”) (Schuessler, 2007; Baxter and Sagart, 2017; Zhang, Jacques and Lai, 2019), which STEDT derives from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g-ja (“to itch”). Also compare Lepcha ᰚᰭ (yak, “to itch”) (Schuessler, 2007), which STEDT derives from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-sak (“to itch”).
