From Old Japanese. Appears in the Man'yōshū, completed some time after 759 CE. Derived as a compound of (ma, eye, ancient combining form of modern reading me) +‎ (na, old variant of possessive particle no) +‎ (futa, lid).[1][2][3] The futa changes to buta as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
