Readings
- Go-on: しょう (shō, Jōyō)←せう (seu, historical)
- Kan-on: しょう (shō, Jōyō)←せう (seu, historical)
- Kun: みことのり (mikotonori, 詔, Jōyō); つげる (tsugeru, 詔げる)
- Nanori: さとし (satoshi)
Usage notes
This is one of only three everyday kanji with a 5 morae reading, and one of only two nouns, namely 詔 (mikotonori). The only other kanji with a 5 morae reading are 承, in the verb 承る (uketamawaru), and 志 (kokorozashi), and no everyday kanji have a 6 or more morae reading.
The unusually long reading is due to it representing a triple compound word, analyzed as 御言宣 (mikotonori), yielding 1+2+2=5.
