Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *ɢuns) : semantic (motion) + phonetic (OC *kun).

Etymology

STEDT relates it to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *wal (round; circular), which is also connected to the following:

  • (OC *ɢon, “round”)
  • (OC *ɡʷraːn, “round”)
  • (OC *sɢʷans, “to revolve; to return”)
  • (OC *ɡʷraːn, “ring”)
  • (OC *ɡʷraːn, “to return”)
  • (OC *ɦŋons, “courtyard”).

(OC *ɢuns, “halo”) is the same word (Schuessler, 2007). It is possibly related to (OC *ɢun, “cloud”) (ibid.).

Additionally, Karlgren (1933) relates it to (OC *ɢʷɯl, “to surround”), and Wang (1982) to (OC *ɡuːl, “to return”).
