Ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : 單 (“hunting weapon”) + 犬 (“dog”) – "hunting". 口 was added later (see 嘼).
Etymology
[edit]Exopassive of 狩 (OC *qʰljus, “to hunt”), literally "what is hunted" (Schuessler, 2007). Speculatively, 獸 (OC *qʰljus) can be compared with Tibetan འཆོར་བ ('chor ba, “to hunt”) (ibid.).
