alternative forms | 腳/脚 骹 |
Chinese sources commonly consider this to be a vernacular-layer descendant of Old Chinese 骹 (OC *kʰraːw, “lower leg”). It, however, bears great resemblance to the Tai etymon for “leg”, e.g. Thai ขา (kǎa, “leg”) < Proto-Tai *p.qaːᴬ (“leg”) (Yue-Hashimoto, 1976; Luo, 1992). Such similarity may be superficial, as the Tai etymon is cognate with Proto-Kam-Sui *kwa (“leg”) and there is a disagreement in rime (Schuessler, 2007).
