Usage notes

  • Like other Portuguese clitic pronouns, lhe should not be used to begin a sentence in the standart language. In this situation, place the pronoun after the verb, attached with a hyphen. However, this rule is not always followed in non-standard Brazilian speech, which places clitic pronouns before the verb or avoids them entirely by the use of strong subject pronouns following the verb.
  • In common Brazilian speech, lhe is most commonly used only to replace você, not ele or ela.
Dei-lhe uma camisa. (Portugal, standard in Brazil)I gave him/her/you (singular) a shirt.
Lhe dei uma camisa. (Brazil, non-standard)I gave you (singular) a shirt.
Dei para você uma camisa. (Brazil, non-standard)I gave you (singular) a shirt.
Dei para ele/ela uma camisa. (Brazil, non-standard)I gave him/her a shirt.
  • Synonyms are preferred instead, if used after the verb and its direct object.
