Borrowed from Sanskrit मार (māra, “evil one; tempter; death personified”) or Pali māra (“idem”). Compare Old Khmer māra, māra°, °māra (“Buddhist Satan; death”); Modern Khmer មារ (miə); Northern Thai ᨾᩣ᩠ᩁ.
