Etymology

From Middle Chinese 伴 (MC banX, “companion; partner”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨻᩮᩥ᩠᩵ᨶ, Khmer ភឿន (phɨən), Lao ເພື່ອນ (phư̄an), Shan ပိူၼ်ႈ (pōen), Vietnamese bạn.
