Etymology[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲, OC *tiːl): semantic  ‎(man, person) + phonetic  ‎(OC *tiːl, *til) – a person lowering themselves, bowing. Note that 氐 is a person bowing or stooping, hence connotation of “down, low, bow”.
