Chinese
[edit]Glyph origin
[edit]Ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : 聿 + 日 (“sun”). Used to mean “daytime” in ancient texts.
The significance and meaning of the 聿 component, as present in the oracle bone inscriptions, is not clear. Various theories exist, including that it serves as a phonetic component, in which case the character would be a phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *tus) : phonetic 聿 (OC *b·lud) + semantic 日 (“sun”).

Old Japanese
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Derived from 日 (pi1, “day”), suffixed with an element ru of unclear meaning. Compare 夜 (yo1) → 夜 (yo1ru, “night, evening”), which seems to use this same ru element.
