Etymology

[edit]

The hiragana character (u) with a dakuten (). The hiragana , and were introduced for hiragana-katakana correspondence with , and in the Japanese input method in Fujitsu OASYS[1] and then registered in JIS X 0213.[2]

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [vɯ̟ᵝ]
  • IPA(key): [bɯ̟ᵝ] (some speakers, especially older people)

Syllable

[edit]

(vu

  1. (rare) The hiragana syllable (vu). Its equivalent in katakana is (vu).

Usage notes

[edit]
  • This is a relatively recent addition to kana usage to represent the non-native sound vu. As such, this is only found in borrowed words. Many speakers, especially older people, may pronounce this more as bu, [bɯ̟ᵝ].
  • The sound vu appears almost exclusively in borrowed words, and is therefore normally written in katakana as (vu). This hiragana character is used much more rarely, and exists in computer encodings primarily for correspondence with the katakana form.
