Etymology[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲, OC *pʰaːns): phonetic  ‎(OC *paːns, half (cow)) + semantic  ‎(knife) – to cut fine distinctions 刀 (to judge, to discriminate). Phonetic (半) is also a cow cut in half, hence “divide a cow”.
