Ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : 耳 (“ear”) + 絲 (“silk”).
According to Duan Yucai, 聯 and 連/连 are two characters for the same word, with the former used in the Zhou dynasty and the latter in the Han dynasty.
Etymology
