- Croatian is based on Chakavian, Kajkavian and Shtokavian dialects. Serbian is based only on Shtokavian dialect.
- Serbian language standard tends to be "inclusive", whereas Croatian standard is more purist and prefers neologisms instead of loan-words.
- Croats use "softer" accent than Serbian speakers.
