Glyph origin

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *prud) : semantic (bamboo) + phonetic (OC *b·lud, writing brush) – a hand holding a brush . The bamboo () refers to the material of traditional Chinese brushes.

Etymology

Benedict (1972) surmises that this might be a loan from Austro-Tai into Sino-Tibetan; cf. Proto-Austronesian *bulut (hairy filaments of certain plants, husk) (Cebuano bulut).
