Etymology
From Persian آذربایجان (âzarbâyjân), from Arabic أَذَرْبَيْجَان (ʔaḏarbayjān), from Classical Persian آذربایگان (âðarbâyegân), آذربادگان (âðarbâdgân), form Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾtwrpʾtkʾn), [script needed] (ʾtwrpʾtkn /Ādurbādagān/), from the name of Atropates, the Persian nobleman who founded the independent kingdom of Atropatene, from Old Persian 𐎠𐎬𐎼𐎱𐎫 (Āturpat, “protected by fire”). For the suffix see -ական (-akan). Compare Old Armenian Ատրպատական (Atrpatakan), Ատրապատական (Atrapatakan), Ատրպայական (Atrpayakan), Armenian Ադրբեջան (Adrbeǰan), Byzantine Greek Ἀδαρβιγάνων (Adarbigánōn), Classical Syriac ܐܕܘܪܒܝܓܐܢ (ʾĀḏōrbêḡān).
