Etymology

[edit]

From Pali upakaraṇa (accessory), from upa (secondary; subordinate) + karaṇa (making; creation; production; etc); or from Sanskrit उपकरण (upakaraṇa, idem), from उप (upa, idem) + करण (karaṇa, idem); equivalent to Thai อุป (ùp-bpà-) +‎ กรณ์. Cognate with Lao ອຸປະກອນ (ʼu pa kǭn), Old Khmer upakaraṇa (assistance, support; instrument, equipment; etc); Modern Khmer ឧបករណ៍ (ʼupaʼkɑɑ).
