Glyph origin[edit]

Historical forms of the character
Shuowen Jiezi (compiled in Han)
Small seal script

In the bronze script, it was attested as 𬔧, an ideogrammic compound (會意会意) : (jade ornament) + (to hold) – holding a jade ornament > “to bestow”. The component corrupts into or , and later to or a variant with under . An additional semantic component (“cowrie; money”) was often added. The and components combine to form an emergent phonetic component (OC *koːŋs).

Shuowen reinterprets it as a phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *kluːmʔ, *kluːms, *kromʔ, *kloːms) : abbreviated phonetic (OC *kʰluːms) + semantic (shell; money), but this is not supported by earlier scripts.
