From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *l-ta-s/t (to see, to look); cognate with Tibetan ལྟ (lta, to look at, to see) (LaPolla, 1994). It has also been connected with Proto-Tai *p.taːᴬ (eye) (Unger, 1990).
