Etymology[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲, OC *taːm, *taːms): semantic  ‎(hand) + phonetic  ‎(OC *tjam) – to carry by hand. 詹 has meaning of “speak too much”, hence connotations of “carry too much”, bear a burden.
