Japanese
Warning: Default sort key "ใ" overrides earlier default sort key "๐".
Etymology
From cursive man'yลgana ๆฑ, by analogy with other hiragana. First used by linguists in the Edo period.
Syllable
๐ (romaji ye)
- The hiragana syllable "ye".
Usage notes
- ๐ and ๐ are used to represent the Japanese language before the mid-10th century, in which /e/ and /je/ were different phonemes.
/e/ /je/ hiragana ใ ๐ katakana ๐ ใจ
- In modern Japanese, old /e/, /je/ both evolved into /e/, and are both written as ใ in hiragana and ใจ in katakana. Sound /je/ reintroduced later is written as ใใ in hiragana and ใคใง in katakana.
- ๐ and ๐ are retrospective inventions. They were not actually used in the ancient Japanese literature (which uses man'yลgana instead) and thus are not included in the historical kana orthography.

Particle
๐ (romaji ye)
- (obsolete) Identical in meaning to the particle ใธ, but used only after pronunciations of ใ, ๐, and ใ.
