Derived in the Heian period from writing the man'yōgana kanji 良 in the cursive sōsho style.

- The hiragana syllable ら (ra). Its equivalent in katakana is ラ (ra). It is the thirty-ninth syllable in the gojūon order; its position is ら行あ段 (ra-gyō a-dan, “row ra, section a”).
