Derived in the Heian period from writing the man'yōgana kanji 世 in the cursive sōsho style.

The hiragana syllable せ ( se ) . Its equivalent in katakana is セ ( se ) . It is the fourteenth syllable in the gojūon order; its position is さ行 え段 ( sa-gyō e-dan , “ row sa , section e ” ) .
