Perhaps Sino-Tibetan; compare Chepang ङेव्‍ह्‌सा (ŋewh-, to nibble) (Schuessler, 2007). The Min vernacular readings are reminiscent of Proto-Tai *giəwᶜ (to chew), whence Thai เคี้ยว (kíao) (ibid.).
