Chemical element
Si
Previous: () (Al)
Next: (lín) (P)

Phono-semantic compound (形聲): semantic (stone) + phonetic (guī).

Etymology[edit]

A orthographic borrowing from Japanese (けい)() (keiso) (Wu, 2010); pronunciation from its phonetic part (guī) (ibid.), in turn from Dutch keiaarde (silicon). The usage of () is dated in Mainland China as it is homophonous to () "selenium" and () "tin". In Taiwan, these three words are not homophonous.
