     The parrot can speak, but is no more than a bird. The gibbon can speak, but is no more than an beast. Now, if a person lacks propriety, even if they can speak, are they not also of a beastly mind? Only beasts lack propriety, which is why their sires and offspring share the same female. Therefore the sages devised propriety to teach people, and to make people know to distinguish themselves from the beasts by the possession of propriety.
