Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *kraŋʔ) : semantic 日 (“sun”) + phonetic 京 (OC *kraŋ).
Etymology 1
[edit]Possibly Sino-Tibetan. Probably related to 鏡 (OC *kraŋs, “mirror”) and 影 (OC *qraŋʔ, “shadow”) (Wang, 1982; Baxter and Sagart, 2014). STEDT compares it to Proto-Kuki-Chin *klaaŋ-I, *klaan-II (“to shine; light; bright”) and lists 亮 (OC *raŋs, “bright”), 陽 (OC *laŋ, “sunshine”), 章 (OC *kjaŋ, “emblem; to display”) as additional comparanda.
